Youth Coordinator Job Description 2023
Role:
The Summer Adventure Leadership Team (SALT) youth program coordinators will develop skills in program/camp design and implementation. The coordinators will develop relationship skills with children, peers, and adults. As the name of the program implies, they will be a team member and will therefore be responsible for working with fellow team members within various settings. Each member will develop personal initiative skills and self-starter skills.
The role of the youth coordinator position will be to vision, research, brainstorm, engage, lead and support youth/young adult and intergenerational programming and activities. This role will also involve engaging in community events and outreach with which the churches are involved.
Responsibilities:
Each member of the team will:
- Identify their personal strengths and learning goals
- Lead children in a variety of activities in a day camp setting and lead activities with teenagers, young adults and adults in a variety of programming throughout the summer.
Over the course of the employment, each coordinator will:
- Welcome, encourage and motivate those who are engaged in the programming/activities/outreach initiatives
- Build a comfortable and safe environment for learning among participants
- Lead and facilitate discussions and activities
- Develop leadership techniques, personal interaction and discipline strategies
- Develop programs and assist in leading those programs/camps throughout the summer. The coordinator will be responsible for preparing and leading different ages and must therefore be aware of age-related characteristics and their corresponding capabilities.
- Share their faith stories with fellow team members and campers (which may include the camper’s families)
- Take direction from the Youth Program Director and Shared Youth and Young Adult Minister to ensure the camp agenda/programs are followed which can include setting or cleaning up activities/events, leading in the various activities, helping to plan for an activity, ensuring that all participants are safe and having fun. Programs could include day camp, recreational, outreach, worship/faith-based gatherings/worship
- Assisting in a variety of other tasks and assignments that will assist and support the youth and young adult activities in the present and the future (such as social media content, research, and future programming)
Qualifications/Skills
- Some experience working in children’s programs, and recreational activities with people of all ages.
- Has a love and passion to work with people of all ages, especially children and youth
- Experience and comfort in offering leadership in a Christian environment
- Able to work in an environment where interruptions are frequent
- Ability to work in a team but also can work independently
- Community-minded
Successful candidates will be required:
Successful candidates will be required to provide a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check (if they are over 18 yrs). Reliable access to transportation is an asset, but not required.

Accountability

Employment Parameters:
Length of Employment: 9 weeks ( depending on funding from CSJ) and the hours will be flexible throughout the summer depending on programs led. The last day of employment will be August 25, 2023
Hours of Employment: Monday-Friday (camp weeks) and may require some weekend work for the rest of the summer employment.
Wage: $15.50/hour for 30-35 hours/week (depending on Canada Summer Jobs funding)

This person is hired by the SALT Coordinating Team of First-St. Andrew’s, Metropolitan and Siloam United Church and is directly responsible to the Shared Youth and Young Adult Minister. The person that is hired will have a strong and growing faith. The youth program director will develop skills in program design, theme development, community engagement, visioning
and implementation. They will be part of a team and therefore be responsible for working with fellow team members within various settings.
The position of Youth Program Director responsibilities includes:
Designing, developing and planning a dynamic and age-appropriate summer program, including 3 weeks of camp in consultation with the Shared Youth and Young Adult Minister. The programs will include, organized play, outdoor time, drama/music, arts/crafts, baking, faith-based activities, physical activity, and learning about oneself and the world.
Develop a variety of programs, with the help of the Program Coordinators, and the Shared Youth and Young Adult Minister and assist in leading those programs for teens, and young adults and intergenerational opportunities for people to gather for community building, faith development, outreach, and fellowship.
Designing and delivering staff training for each of the camps in partnership with the Shared Youth and Young Adult Minister and following up with weekly staff meetings to ensure a safe and positive camp experience and summer programs for all.
Ensuring that all team members feel valued and part of the team as programs are planned for the duration of the summer (after the camps) for youth, young adults and people of all ages (intergenerational).
Welcome, encourage and motivate those who are engaged in the programming/activities/outreach initiatives.
Create a list of supplies before each camp/program in order for supplies to be purchased.
Foster connections with parents/teens through regular communication via newsletters, regular email updates, and social media before, during and after each week of camp/program.
Working within and tracking a budget to ensure necessary supplies and daily nutritional snacks are available. This will be in consultation with the Shared Youth and Young Adult Minister.
Assessing and making decisions with regard to daily conditions such as weather and adjusting the program appropriately with the guidance of the Youth and Young Adult Minister.
Providing reports to the Youth and Young Adult Minister on daily participation, registration, session plans and accident reports.
Work with the youth program coordinators to be responsible for the final clean-up after the summer.
Provide a written or verbal evaluation at the end of the summer. This evaluation should identify the good and the not-so-good, the highlights and low points of the programs/camps.
The preferred candidate will demonstrate:
- the ability to plan in advance and execute those plans
- excellent organization and time management skills
- excellent interpersonal skills
- have some experience in program planning
- have some experience with administrative work
- some previous experience working in a team environment
- some previous experience working in a camp environment
- experience working with groups of school-age children and teenagers in a recreational setting
- A positive, sensitive and inclusive attitude toward working with people of all ages
- ability to manage and delegate tasks and encourage skill development in others
- ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and co-workers, in person, in writing and via social media
- community-minded
ability to use computer software to track and manage camper registrations, fees, budgeting and supply procurement
Successful candidates will be required:
