THE DIFFICULT WORDS OF JESUS
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO HIS MOST PERPLEXING TEACHINGS”
by AJ Levine
Six Sessions starting 10 a.m., Friday, September 23rd, 2022 in the O’Brien-Sproule Library Chapel, Siloam United Church.
If you are like most people, you have struggled with many biblical passages, including some of Jesus’ teachings. For example, want to follow Jesus?
Then sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, hate your father and mother, and become a slave to others!
In this study Amy-Jill Levine tells us that the name “Israel” means “to wrestle with God.” Likewise, she says, we do well to wrestle with God by exploring those teachings that confuse and disturb us and which, tragically, often continue to cause harm.
Remember that Jesus said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
This is what we will try to do this Fall.
You are invited to join Sheila for this fascinating new bible/video/book study by biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine. No previous knowledge of the Bible is necessary, but if you have a Bible, bring it along. If you don’t, we have plenty to share at Siloam. All you need is an open mind and an open heart! And if you can’t make it Friday mornings, join us for Sunday worship virtually or in person when Sheila will explore the themes of this book in a sermon series she will be developing to accompany the study.
Books can be ordered through the United Church Christian Resource Centre or Creation Bookstore at 900 Oxford Street East, 519 659 2610.
Please note registration for this study is limited, so please phone Erin in the office or write to [email protected] to pre-register.
