LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH
CALL TO WORSHIP
ONE: Arise; shine, for your light has come! ALL: We are called out of our darkness into light. ONE: Lift up your eyes and look around. ALL: We rejoice in the gift of light. ONE: Come let us worship the God of light and joy and peace. ALL: We come to kneel at the cradle of the babe, the light incarnate.
LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE:
All remain seated and sing, “Let There Be Light”, #679 VU:
Let there be light.
Let there be understanding.
Let all the people praise God.
Hallowe’ed be thy name!
OPENING PRAYER (unison):
God of promise and light, open our eyes this morning, that we may see your light in the darkness. Open our hearts, that we may perceive your promises of justice and righteousness fulfilled in the babe of Bethlehem. May we, like the Magi, have a star to guide us on our quest to find the one who will truly set us free. May this time of worship bring us closer to you, that the good news of the birth of light and love will transform our lives. Amen.
HYMN: “The First Nowell” #91 VU
(Children come forward for message
during the singing of this hymn.)
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Jen Prince

SUNG RESPONSE: “Now Thank We All Our God” #236 VU
Now thank we all our God, with heart, and hands, and voices,
who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices;
who from our mother’s arms has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.
HYMN: “When Heaven’s Bright with Mystery” # 93 VU
THE MESSAGE: “Outsiders” Rev. Dr. Sheila Macgregor
PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST
Lift your eyes and look around. The light of the babe of Bethlehem shines from the face of each one here. Let us now greet that light, rejoice that we are here together, and pass the peace of Christ, our joy and our hope.
WE SHARE GOD’S LOVE WITH OTHERS
INVITATION TO THE OFFERING:
We have seen the light of the world. We have been called to follow the star of promise. Like the Magi, let us bring our gifts to honour the babe of Bethlehem and bring the light to all the dark places in our community and our world.
OFFERTORY HYMN: “What Child Is This?” #74 VU
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh;
come, one and all, to own him.
The King of Kings salvation brings;
let loving hearts enthrone him.
This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud,
the Babe, the Son of Mary!
OFFERING PRAYER (unison):
God of light and promise, we bring our gifts to further your work in a dark world. May they bring your light to those overwhelmed by darkness, pain, and loneliness. Accept these gifts of money and time, indeed, the gift of our very selves. Let them shine for all to see, and be brought into the sphere of your love and righteousness. Amen.
HYMN: “As With Gladness Men of Old” #81 VU
ONE: Arise, and go forth to shine for all the world to see.
ALL: We go to spread the good news of light and love,
righteousness and justice. ONE: Go now and follow the star that will guide you on your journey this week, this year, and forever. ALL: As the Magi of old, we go forth in trust and excitement, transformed in the presence of the child of light. ONE: May the blessing of the God of light rest upon you and fill you with light.
SUNG RESPONSE: “Go Out and Serve Him”
Filled with the Spirit, filled with God’s grace,
Filled with the friendship we find in this place;
Called as disciples, go now in faith.
Jesus will show the way.
Go out and serve Him, serve Him
Carry His Word into all of the world.
Go and serve Him, serve Him.
Go out and serve our Lord.
Go serve our Lord.
