LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH
CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. Janet Fradette
ONE: Welcome to worship on this Third Sunday in Advent. Our focus today is the Light which beckons us onward.
ALL: As these days are growing darker, we need to focus on the light.
ONE: Jesus is the light which God has given especially to the world.
ALL: Help us make our hearts ready to receive Jesus, our hope and our light. AMEN.
ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING: The Elliott Family
ONE: Birds, though you long have ceased to build,
ALL: Guard the nest that must be filled;
ONE: Even the hour when wings are frozen
ALL: God for fledging time has chosen.
ONE: Light the candle and sing today:
ALL: Joy the bird is on the way.
CANDLE LIGHTING: All remain seated and sing, “A Candle is Burning”, #6 VU, verse 3:
A candle is burning, a candle of joy,
a candle to welcome brave Mary’s new boy.
Our hearts fill with wonder, and eyes light and glow
as joy brightens winter like sunshine on snow.
OPENING PRAYER (unison): Rev. Janet Fradette
Lord of Love and Light, shine through our darkness, bringing us hope. Open our hearts for the journey, our eyes for the light, our spirits for the peace which you bring. Fill our mouths with laughter and speech with shouts of joy that we shall reveal the love with which you surround us. We offer this prayer in the name of the One who is coming into the world bringing your hope, love, peace, and joy, Jesus Christ, and we pray the prayer he taught us, saying together:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus said: “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:11
OFFERTORY HYMN: “What Child Is This?” #74 VU
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh;
come, one and all, to own him.
The King of Kings salvation brings;
let loving hearts enthrone him.
This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud,
the Babe, the Son of Mary!
PRAYER OF DEDICATION (unison): Kerry Stover
Lord, you have blessed our lives in so many ways. Receive these tokens of our blessings and cause them to work in this world which you have loaned to us to make light shine in the darkness and peace an attainable goal in all conflicts. We offer these gifts in Jesus’ name. AMEN.
