While in many United Church congregations across the country summer is often a quieter time in the life of the community, this summer at Siloam has been filled with activity and new life!
After completing an application last winter, we learned in late April that Siloam had received a $27 000 grant from the Canadian government to employ students over the course of the summer. Through this generous support, we hired six young people who have been active in our Open Mic Coffee House program over the past several years. From May to August they offered their many gifts through activities including: faith formation leadership with our Sunday School and Summer Day Camp; the creation of homemade paper cards and garden ornaments that will be sold at the church later in the year; and the planting and tending of a garden on church property with the vegetables being donated to the ELUCO Food Cupboard and the London Food Bank.
We will still be harvesting vegetables from the garden for the next few weeks and we are well beyond our halfway point of harvesting and receiving donations to meet our goal of giving 160 baskets of fresh produce to those in need for our 160th anniversary year. Please keep your donations coming in up until September 24th!
Another highlight of the summer was, as always, the Siloam Summer Day Camp. With one of the highest years of attendance in recent years, fifty-five children participated in awesome faith based programming here at Siloam. Many thanks to all our staff and volunteers who made the camp such a joyful experience for all. The Open Mic Coffee Houses also continued over the summer with over forty young people in attendance at each session. We are grateful for the gifts of this summer at Siloam and we look forward to more excitement through the coming fall!
